Grade 4 is where fractions stop being a picture of a pizza and start being arithmetic. Long multiplication and long division are consolidated, factors and primes arrive, and decimals appear alongside the fractions they describe.
What to expect
Expect fractions to be slower than they look. Adding halves to thirds needs a common denominator, which needs multiples, which needs the times table — so the prime-factor work is not a detour from fractions, it is the thing that makes them possible. Order of operations belongs to this year as well, now with brackets.
Where to start
Start with Factors & Primes rather than with Fractions, however backwards that sounds. Common denominators are a question about multiples, so a child who can factorize 12 and 18 has the tool that makes 1/2 + 1/3 tractable. Then take Fractions before Add & Subtract Fractions, and leave Decimals until the fraction it describes is familiar.
