Grade 2 is the year place value has to become real. Numbers go past 100, addition and subtraction move into columns, and the multiplication table arrives — three things that all rest on knowing that the 4 in 348 means four tens.
What to expect
Expect carrying and borrowing to be the sticking point rather than the arithmetic itself. Most mistakes on a column sheet are a digit written in the wrong column, which is why every sheet here prints on a grid with one digit per square. Rounding and the order of operations start in this year too, both at their gentlest.
Where to start
Start with Column Addition & Subtraction at two digits and no regrouping, so the layout is learned before the carrying is. Turn regrouping on once the columns are reliably aligned. Run the Multiplication grid alongside it a row at a time — fives and tens first, then twos and fours — and leave Rounding until place value is secure, because it depends on it entirely.
