Grade 1 is where arithmetic starts being written down rather than counted out. The sheets here keep the numbers inside 10 and 20, where a child can still check an answer on their fingers if they need to, and move the missing number around so that a + □ = c turns up as often as a + b = □.
What to expect
Expect fluency to come before speed. A six- or seven-year-old who works slowly but writes the digits the right way round and lines them up is further along than one who answers quickly and guesses. Comparison and the visual logic puzzles belong here too: both ask a child to explain why, which is the habit the later grades depend on.
Where to start
Start with Add & Subtract set to within 10, two columns, and leave it there until the page is finished without counting on fingers. Then raise the limit to 20 rather than adding more problems. Comparison can run alongside from the first week, and Bongard Problems are worth one a day: they take five minutes and ask for a sentence rather than a number.
