Grade 3 is the busiest year on this site. Column addition and subtraction become routine, long multiplication and long division both arrive, and division facts have to be quick enough that the long method does not stall halfway through.
What to expect
Expect the new methods to expose old gaps. Long division divides, multiplies, subtracts and brings down at every step, so a shaky times table or an unreliable subtraction shows up immediately — and it shows up as a long-division problem rather than as the thing that actually needs practice. If a sheet goes badly, drop back a step rather than repeating it.
Where to start
Start with Column Multiplication before Long Division, even though both are new this year: long division needs the times table to be instant, and long multiplication is what makes it so. Use Division facts as the bridge — if 42 ÷ 7 is not immediate, long division will stall at every step. Only then move to Long Division, with remainders switched off until the four steps are automatic.
